Old Tile Out, Whitewashed Brick In - Kitchen Backsplash Upgrade

Sometimes a kitchen just needs one change to shift the whole feel of the space. That's exactly what happened here. The old tile backsplash had been on the wall for about 20 years - functional, but tired. Swapping it out for real brick was the move.

We pulled the old tile, set the brick, then whitewashed, distressed, and sealed the entire surface by hand. That three-step finishing process is what gives it that warm, lived-in character. It's not a uniform painted surface - it's got depth, texture, and a little bit of history baked right into it. The warm tones of the brick work really well against the dark countertops and the rich wood cabinetry throughout the kitchen.

What we love about this approach is how well it fits into a space that already had a lot going on. Exposed wood beams, a stained glass window, brick floors, a plaster range hood - this kitchen had serious bones. The new backsplash doesn't compete with any of that. It ties into it. That's the difference between a backsplash that looks added-on and one that looks like it was always supposed to be there.

The same brick treatment carried into a secondary area of the kitchen as well, which keeps the whole space feeling cohesive. Under-cabinet lighting really makes the texture of the whitewashed finish pop. That's a detail that a lot of people don't think about until they see it in person - good lighting turns a nice backsplash into a great one.
